The mission of WCU is to provide an innovative and relevant learning environment; to support the personal and professional development of adult learners in acquiring life-long critical thinking and analytical skills.
Innovation in education since 1909
Originally chartered in 1909 as an ophthalmology school, West Coast University has experienced several incarnations, including becoming one of the early pioneers in offering Bachelor Degree programs designed to meet the needs of working adults in the 1950’s. The success of this model led the University to expand and diversify its program to include offerings in the areas of business and management, computer science, industrial technology and pre-health science.
In May of 1997, the University was reorganized and new leadership emerged – refocused on programs that were in demand and most beneficial to working adults.
In early 2005, West Coast University became only the second-ever private post-secondary institution in California to be granted a Registered Nursing preparation (Associates Degree in Nursing) program by the Board of Registered Nursing. This was truly a testament to WCU's quest for excellence and the pursuit of high demand career training. In June of 2008, WCU became the first university of its kind in California to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Today’s West Coast University is a leader in Nursing and Health Care Administration educational programs. It has an attractive, modern campus with many resources; a dynamic and experienced faculty and staff; and academic curricula designed to challenge students and prepare them to become valuable members of the health care industry – for life.
